We’ve been spending the majority of our time in Bali relaxing. It’s been pretty great. Especially after our recent educational overload of Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia history. We decided however (both for our own mental health and cultural interest), that we should do something a little different than just sit on the tourist trap beach for two weeks straight. Thus we have now come to Ubud, a little artist town centre and I think the capital of the island.
It turns out it’s perfect timing - a huge cremation ceremony for the 1st son of the 10th son of the last king of Bali (or something like that) along with several others, was set to take place on our last day of our Ubud stay. The fact that the cute little bungalow we rented for next to nothing was then abruptly taken away from us without warning (we figure the owner decided she could get more money from someone else in this time of festivity) was a little unpleasant, but other than that our time here has been very interesting. We found ourselves a new place to stay (with great difficulty, because every local who possibly can is coming to the ceremony and everything is full) and have started frequenting a delicious organic food restaurant.
Today we saw the ceremony, and for that the photos/video I took is required. It was pretty insane. To begin with, 4 immense statues had been created. 2 bulls, 1 dragon, 1 phoenix. The bulls were about 25 metres high, the dragon and phoenix about twice the size. Absolutely massive. The dead bodies were apparently put into the bulls, which were then burned. Prior to this burning, there was a long 1.2 km procession through which these 4 structures were carried. No, they were not wheeled, driven, or otherwise transported. 6000 men on rotation carried these immense pieces on their shoulders. It was pretty crazy. We waited 2 hours in brilliant sunshine, packed in like little sardines on the streets, but I think it was worth it. There was a very old-world feeling to the whole ceremony, and not only because we’d been requested to wear the traditional sarong. The masses of people were unlike any crowd I’ve been in, perhaps because I’ve never seen so many people gathered for a death with such a sense of festivity. The streets were jam-packed, to the point that there were police officers who remained 10 feet in front of each structure in order to force people back onto the sidewalks and further. The structures were so large, including their carriers, that they took up the entire street including the edges of the sidewalks. Every time one of the structures would make it’s way up, the crowd would swell back, pressed against the building walls as tightly as possible. Hard to describe, but I’ll try to post some of the video clips if possible!

The 2008 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival will take place from the 14-19 October. The theme of this year’s Festival is Tri Hita Karana – Man, Nature, God.

This annual celebration of international and Asian literature is centred in the small hill town of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. Ubud is generally recognised as being one of the most important artistic and cultural centres in Indonesia.

The main program of the Festival comprises four days of panel sessions in which writers, journalists and academics discuss issues of society, religion, politics and culture from a literary perspective. These sessions take place at Indus Restaurant overlooking the Champuhan valley and a neighbouring venue, an old bank building nicknamed the ‘Left Bank Lounge’. Both venues are located on Jalan Raya Sanginggan, less than 5 minutes drive from the main street of Ubud.

In addition to these panel sessions the Festival also offers a wide range of writing related workshops for adults such as travel writing, writing for the media, editing and publishing, memoir writing, short story writing and novel writing. For convenience, workshops are held in venues close to Indus and the Left Bank Lounge.

Cultural workshops are also offered to those visitors interested in learning more about the culture and lifestyle of their hosts the Balinese.

Several Feature Events also take place over the four days of the main Festival program including our ever popular Literary Lunches and Dinners and the elegant Amandari Cocktail Evening. These intimate events, held in some of the most stunning resorts in the Ubud area, are a chance to hear some of the Festival’s ‘star’ writers talk in depth about their lives and their work.

Then another reason which make me so in love of Lombok is about their romantic folklore Putri Nyale or Putri Mandalika [Princess Mandalika] which this story 'sending' me back into my childhood memory when my parents reading a book "Putri Mandalika" in my bedtime. A tale about a beautiful princess who loved by many many guys. And she decided not to take one of them to avoid a battle among them. If the King [her father] asking to whom she's fallin' in love, she prefer go to the beach and whenever King calling her name she always says, "Ku ta" [ku means I'm and ta means here]. When several princes pushed her to make a decision, she's runaway to the beach also saying to her father "Ku ta". Then the beach where she's runaway named 'Pantai Kuta' [it's not Pantai Kuta or Kuta Beach in Bali, by the way]. She jumps from the beach and changed into a small worm called 'nyale'. Year by year this nyale becomes thousands colorful sea-worms and locals along the Kuta Beach in Lombok take them for delicious food.
Every February 19th [oh, pretty close to westerner's Valentine on February 14th!!!], the locals of Kuta Beach celebrates this appears of nyale as a part of their tradition. For those who wants to get a partner as soon as possible, they can hang-out in this celebration to find someone there. Pretty romantic isn't it? And the hill in front of the beach named as "The Love Hill".

Last but not least, finding sunset at Lombok is something amazing. After waiting about 3 days, finally I found a clear sunset where God painting the sky with beautiful colors. It's also a romantic moment when colors changing hue. Gold, red, blue, grey, purple and so many.
